What is Ashura?

In the month of Muharram 61 AH, an event took place in Iraq at a place known as Kerbala on the bank of the river Euphrates. It appeared insignificant from a historical perspective at the time. A large army mobilized by the Umayyad regime besieged a group of less than a hundred individuals, pressuring them to pledge allegiance to the Caliph of the time. The small group resisted, leading to a severe battle where they all met martyrdom.

The commemoration of Ashura on the 10th of Muharram each year serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the family of the Prophet Muhammad. It also sheds light on those who sought to annihilate Islam and the Prophet's family, and those who, then and now, chose to stand idle.

It stands as one of the most significant events in Islamic history. A day that will be forever remembered by all Shia followers of Imam Ali and Imam Hussain.
